Mother’s Day at Align Wellness Center

Posted on: May 7th, 2019

This month is Mother’s Day and Align Wellness Center has the ability to keep you, your kids, and your mom healthy and feeling your best.

Moms do so much for us at home, work, or both. A lot of moms feel fatigued at the end of the day or may experience headaches or migraines, making it difficult to do daily tasks, exercise, or taking care of things at the office. Many moms have discovered that chiropractic care can make these everyday tasks easier by helping their bodies work more efficiently.

Chiropractic care offers a safe, natural, and effective way to stay in the game, helping moms take care of the things they need to do every day.

For years, our office has been treating kids, mothers, and grandmothers with issues ranging from difficulty focusing in school, migraines, back pain, neuropathy, to head injuries.

A very common problem seen in moms is lower back and neck pain and many times this can come from using an improper technique when picking up your kids. When your kids wind up being over 25 percent of your body weight, you really need to start thinking about how you’re picking them up. Here’s an example. If your child weighs 35 pounds and you weigh 200 pounds, your child is 17 percent of your body weight.

If you weigh 140 pounds or less, you need to rethink picking up your child, or at least get support in managing how your body responds.

Pick up your kids without neck and back pain.

If you’re all good on your weight and do want to pick up your child, here’s a tip on how to pick them up without hurting your back:

  • First of all, don’t bend over.
  • Squat and bend your knees down as far as they can go
  • Giving your child a hug, grab tight, and then lift from your bottom, using only your legs and buttocks to lift.

To set them down, just reverse this, never bending over at your waist. Bending at the waist can cause neck and back pain. See the video for a visual demonstration on this.

If you’re picking up your kids properly and are still experiencing neck or back pain, contact us so we can help resolve that problem.

Grandmothers may need chiropractic care, too.

Moms with small kids aren’t the only moms that may need chiropractic care. Some moms that may experience symptoms such as dizziness or vertigo can also benefit from seeing a chiropractor.

Whether it’s your mom or the mom of someone you know, if caring for them is becoming difficult due to her dizziness, vertigo, or balance issues, she may need her spine checked out to see how efficiently her brain is working and communication. No matter how long it’s been disconnected, we may be able to help her maintain her lifestyle so she can continue to live more independently or just live more.

Chiropractic Care for families.

Over the years, we’ve helped multiple grandmothers, mothers, children, and families through chiropractic care so they can live normally again and feel their best. Here are a couple of stories of actual patients (and their kids) we have here in our office. See the videos for the full interviews.

Bridgett. Bridgett has suffered from back pain most of her life and has seen chiropractors before. She just assumed back pain was just going to be a part of her life.

She’s struggled with simple daily activities like commuting; standing on a train and walking several blocks was painful.

Since she’s been working with Align Wellness Center, her commutes have been a lot better and she got back her speed while walking across town. She says she gets where she needs to go “without having to walk super slow.”

Bridgett decided to introduce her family to chiropractic care as well. Her youngest daughter had no complaints but she got her checked out anyway, and it was found that she had a problem in her neck.

It turns out her daughter was lacking focus in school and in sports. Since her care began, her focus is better and her grades have improved. She went from B’s and C’s on her report card to all A’s.

When asked what she would say to anyone who may be experiencing difficulty with a commute causing pain, or who have kids who struggle with focus, she answered:

“It can’t hurt to check it out. Maybe you have a problem, maybe you don’t, but why not see if you can do something about it?”

Kim. Kim began care at Align Wellness 7-8 years ago along with her son, Michael. Michael was a football player who was having back issues at the time. Around the same time, Kim began having neuropathy in her arms, feet, and hands, so they decided they would seek chiropractic care together.

Kim said she was having trouble with small tasks such as reading and computer work. After working with us in our office for just a little while, along with the part of her treatment she does at home, she says she can now feel her feet again and her arms and hands no longer feel like they’re falling asleep while doing small tasks.

Michael was able to go off to college and came back working hard as a welder.

When Kim was asked how she sees her future now that she’s able to feel her hands and feet again, her response was, “I realized I’m not as old as I actually am and I can keep improving.” The most exciting part of her improvement is being able to carry her grandkids.

After being told by her doctor about her problems “that’s just the way it is unless you want surgery,” she now knows that there’s help available and it can be fixed.

Chiropractic care for Children

Adults aren’t the only ones that benefit from chiropractic care.

Dr. Gerstin has worked with many kids and athletes over the last 20 years. Over the last five months, he’s seen more and more young children come in after head injuries.

Typically when children come in, it’s not necessarily to be seen for the head injury. They come in 2-4 years after and no longer have symptoms like neck stiffness, concussions, or stitches over the eye. Many times kids are having difficulty focusing in class, have headaches or migraines, and chronic colds.

Dr. Gerstin has found that changes that happen in young kids wind up being the result of traumas that happened years before.

Currently, Dr. Gerstin is working with a child who was injured about six years prior to his chiropractic care. This injury happened during recess while playing with his friends.

This child had a concussion. The mom was called and she took him to the doctor. The concussion went away but a couple of months later, but he got another one.

He was a football player and although he was able to keep playing, schoolwork became more difficult. His doctor put him on Adderall along with a depressant to help him sleep at night, which together is a recipe for disaster.

He was brought into our office for pain and it was discovered that he had changes in his neck, probably from his first or second injury, or even successive traumas that he had from either recess or football.

He’s currently going on with a football scholarship and we’re working intensely to correct his spine so he’s less likely to have further head injuries.

One of the main causes for recurring head injuries is the spine is unable to absorb the shock it’s being exposed to.

Small traumas along the way can cause big problems, and chiropractic care has been the one thing shown to correct and restore the proper curve of the spine.

Reduce the number of sick days for your family.

Pain and injuries aren’t the only reasons chiropractic care is a good idea for your family. It can also help you and your family healthy and help to reduce the number of sick days you have.

In a study done about 10 years ago, 17,000 people were followed for five years, keeping track of how many days they needed to take off of work due to being sick or injured.

It was found that one group in the study had been under regular chiropractic care. This group needed 98 percent less sick days from school, work, and life than the others.

Chiropractic care can strengthen your immune system. Dr. Gerstin’s wife, who is also receiving chiropractic care can relate to this.

When she began her care, she admits she didn’t realize just what chiropractic care does, other than helping someone who throws out her back. She said she was surprised that it could help in other ways such as with sinuses, digestion, energy, sleep, immune system, as well as with other issues.

Since beginning her chiropractic care, she noticed her sinus infections were gone. She used to get one every year around the same time each year. She said she has not had one sinus infection in the last eight years. She’s sick less and her immune system is stronger.

Her body is working better and she is feeling better.

When asked what she would tell someone who gets sinus infections, she responded, “ Go see a chiropractor because it can do a lot of things you may be surprised about. Maybe you’ve tried a whole list of other approaches that may or may not have worked, or that may have been short term or medications that make it go away. But ultimately they’ll come back pretty soon after.”

We want our moms to stay healthy and feel their best so they can continue to be productive and get done all it is that they do.

One more tip on staying productive.

A question Dr. Gerstin gets asked a lot is “how do you get so much done in so little time?”

This answer connects to moms and how they get so much done for our families.

It takes segmented and planned time at the beginning of the day. Think, “what are my goals for the day?”

Dr. Gerstin said he wakes up about a half hour before the rest of the household and thinks, “what do I want to take away from the day?” Then he creates his list. He takes about 5 minutes to meditate and visualize these things happening and reads for about 5-7 minutes. He then knocks out some push-ups, about 40-45 of them just to get the blood flowing, and gets on with his day.

Our goal here at Align Wellness Center is to help as many people as possible to get the most out of their days.

If you’re struggling with getting your tasks done, or feeling too fatigued to be productive, we may be able to help you.

Whether you or someone you know is suffering from pain, numbness, tingling, sinus infections, trouble focusing, or you’re worried about how many sick days you’re using, do yourself a favor and consider chiropractic care. It’s a safe, natural, effective treatment for these conditions. Take care of yourself, your mom, and your kids, and contact our office to see what we can do to help your family feel better so you can keep doing the things you need to do.
