Neck Pain and Stiffness

If you or someone you know suffers from neck pain or stiffness, Align Wellness Center may have the solution to help you fix your problem, not just cover it up.

If you are one of the many people that suffer from neck pain or stiffness by the end of the day, you may look to over-the-counter medications for relief. But if you’re taking Tylenol, Advil, or Aleve, you are covering up a problem that’s going on inside.

Some people may take anywhere from 1 to 8 of these pills a week. This has massive effects on your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Even taking just two of these pills, two times a week for 1 year, amounts to over 200 of them! That’s just too much for your body to process.

Our bodies are designed to work on their own, without the need for drugs or surgery. These problems with pain and stiffness are really a whisper from your body, letting you know that something is not working properly.

In most cases, the problem you are facing isn’t from something you’re doing now, but most likely from something that happened 10-15 years ago. This could be a sports activity, car crash, or an evening out with your friends that you may not even remember.

These things can change and shift the position of your spine, putting your alignment off. Then when it sits in this “off” position, it causes those nerves to let you know that something isn’t right.

You may be wondering, “why now?” After all of these years, why is your body just now letting you know something is wrong?

The answer has a lot to do with stress.

Our bodies have a total stress threshold made up of three different kinds of stress, physical, chemical, and emotional stresses. Our body can hold a certain amount of these before it exceeds the total threshold.

Once we have too much of one type of stress, we go beyond the threshold and our health starts to deteriorate.

Here’s an example of each of these stressors:

Physical stress has to do with our everyday activities, like carrying your child, purse, bag, or backpack. It could also come from heavy impacts that have happened in the past like a sports injury or car accident.

Each physical stress builds up to determine how much of the physical threshold you’ll be able to handle, as well as how much you need to balance out the other two stressors.

Chemical stressors can be modified more easily. These are the things we put into our bodies, like the food we eat, the air we breathe, what we drink, medications and vitamins we take.

All of these things help determine the threshold we sustain.

Emotional stressors are the relationships we’re in, whether it be family, friends, or co-workers.

It’s important to find ways to manage and keep emotional stresses in check to stay healthy and sound.

In a normal situation, we have a buffer between the total of these three thresholds and the total threshold (again, see the video for a visual on this).  However, when the body winds up having any of these stresses, it starts to eat up the buffer, developing an excess of the total threshold.

Then, the body begins to deteriorate. It starts internally, your blood sugar may be off, you may get headaches, an upset stomach, trouble breathing, or asthma and allergy problems.

Then it begins to take a toll on the musculoskeletal system and you may get aches and pains, typically across your shoulders and lower back. This is where most of the feedback happens from these organs.

Many times, people will leave this alone, but it continues to progress. The threshold gets further and further out of balance, causing their bodies to be unable to manage or correct it.

For many people, this will result in putting chemicals into their bodies in the form of pharmaceuticals to try and put them back into balance.

In many cases, with the right guidance, we can get you back into balance so you no longer have these stress thresholds overcome.

The key is to listen to your body when it’s giving you pain. This is your warning sign that things are out of balance.

Don’t mask your problem with Aleve, Tylenol, or other medications. These don’t find the cause of the imbalance, and it’ll progress.

If you’re experiencing neck pain and stiffness, you should be seen by a chiropractor. But in the meantime, there are exercises you can try at home to get a little relief.

Please note, if you’re feeling any pain, numbness, or tingling in your hands and arms while doing these, stop them immediately, and find a corrective chiropractor to dig a little deeper to find out what’s going on.

Exercise #1: Known as “the yes,” this exercise is done by lifting your head up and down as far as you can like you’re nodding “yes.” Again, this should be done without pain, so go as far as you can with no pain. Do this 10 times, 3 times a day.

Exercise #2: This one is known as “the no.” Move your head as far to each side as you can like you’re nodding “no,” as long as it’s pain-free. Do this one 10 times, three times a day as well.

Exercise #3: This exercise is lateral flexion or ear to ear. Move your ear to your shoulder, not your shoulder to your ear. Make sure your face is staying flat, not turning your head to either direction.

See our YouTube for a demonstration of these exercises.

If you’re experiencing neck pain or stiffness, a corrective chiropractor can help you.

Here in our office, we specialize in managing people’s posture and biomechanics. The reason this is so valuable is that our bodies’ work by having the brain tell it what to do.

Our brain sends energy down our spine and out the nerves to every tissue, organ, and gland. If this connection diminishes, so do all of your functions.

At Align Wellness Center, some of the exercises we teach our patients is figured out by looking at their posture in 3-D, from the front and the side.

We also use X-rays to find out what’s going on inside, whether it’s a shift, tilt, or twist.

Based on these findings, as well as the exam, we develop unique exercises for you to unravel that spinal cord and free up that energy, helping it pass through.

If you or someone you know has neck pain or stiffness, contact us today so we can get to the cause of your problem and help you to correct it safely and naturally, without medication.
